Split trip expenses with friends, in every currency
Hotels in one currency, dinners in another, and a friend who paid for the car. Sumzy keeps a group trip straight without converting anything behind your back.
How to split a group trip in Sumzy
- Create a trip group and add everyone by email. Friends who don't have the app yet are in the group right away and get an email.
- Add each expense as it happens, in the currency you paid in. Choose who paid — more than one person can pay the same bill — and how to split it.
- Settle up when you're home. Sumzy shows the fewest payments that clear the group, per currency. Record each payment when the money changes hands.
Built for travel
Every currency kept separate
A taxi in pesos, a hotel in dollars and the flight in reais each keep their own currency. Balances are tracked per currency, so a debt in dollars and a debt in reais are never added together at some made-up rate. If the group prefers to settle everything in one currency, you can convert a debt at a rate you choose.
Works with no signal
Add expenses on the plane, on a trail or abroad without data. Sumzy saves them on your phone and syncs when you're back online.
Uneven splits are easy
Split equally, by exact amounts, by percentage, by shares (a couple can count as two shares), or item by item for a restaurant bill. Splits always add up to the cent.
Example: a weekend in Buenos Aires
Ana, Bruno and Carla travel together. Ana pays the hotel, R$900 for the three of them. Bruno pays a dinner of US$60, split equally. Carla pays a museum tour of US$30 for Ana and herself only.
- Reais: Bruno and Carla each owe Ana R$300.
- Dollars: Ana owes US$20 for dinner and US$15 for the tour; Carla owes US$20 for dinner. Debt simplification turns that into two payments: Ana pays Bruno US$35 and Carla pays Bruno US$5.
Sumzy keeps the reais and the dollars as two separate balances and shows the fewest payments to clear each one. Nobody has to agree on an exchange rate in the middle of the trip.
Tips for a fair group trip
- Log expenses the same day. It takes seconds while the receipt is in your hand and saves arguments later.
- Record the currency you actually paid in. Card statements convert at their own rate; the group should not inherit it.
- Leave people out of what they skipped. Pick only the people who joined the tour or the dinner.
- Settle up at the end, once. Debt simplification turns a week of expenses into a handful of payments.
Frequently asked questions
Can I split trip expenses in different currencies?
Yes. Each expense has its own currency, and Sumzy keeps a separate balance for each currency, so nothing is mixed or converted unless you choose to convert a debt.
Does everyone on the trip need the app?
No. Add people by email and they are part of the group immediately. When they install Sumzy and sign in with that email, the whole trip is already there.
Can I add expenses without internet?
Yes. Expenses you add offline are saved on your phone and sync when you reconnect.
Is it free?
Yes. The free plan covers a trip with up to 7 new expenses a day across all your groups. Sumzy Pro removes the daily limit.
